CSTA WMass recently established a book club discussion group that meets after chapter meetings and presentations from 5:30-6:30pm on the second Thursday of each month. The first book we read and discussed together was Dr. Nikki Washington's Unapolagetically Dope.
Chapter members and new attendees gathered in the months of December, January, and February to read and discuss Dr. Nikki Washington's book Unapolagetically Dope. Beginning a few months in advance, Club Treasurer Dan Manseau purchased the books with club money and shipped them out to people who signed up for the book club discussions in advance so that we would all have access to the resource. It was an incredible opportunity to learn what it was like for Dr. Nikki Washington to grow up as a black woman navigating white academic and career spaces. Her tips for young black girls following in her footsteps provided our group great insight into how we can become better antiracist educators and allies, and in some cases is already becoming part of the curriculum in our classrooms. We enjoyed the conversations started by this book so much, that we are planning to continue our book discussions after future meetings, and we hope you will consider joining us as we continue to read antiracist articles and books as a club in future months!
